The Ugly Tie Has Striken Again

Dec. 14th, 2006 | 02:42 pm
location: Who knows?
mood: good good
music: Some Couperin Pieces for Harpsichord

Dear Journal,

You know already what I think of the tie Matthew was wearing at the premiere of P&P in New York (see my previous post and image attached to it).

Well,  the tie (around Matthew's neck) has reappeared. Arghhhhhhhh! Why? Why? Why?

Matthew was wearing it at the Women in Films and Television (WFTV) Awards which ceremony was held on Friday 8th December in London.

Matthew was there to present the Contribution to the Medium Award to Jane Featherstone, the winner.

Jane Featherstone, as you may remember my dear Journal, is working for Kudos whose credits include notably Spooks.

The image below must be credited to  www.darcylicious.com  (of course).

I have two other gems that I found in the Annual Report of the National Theater for the 2005-2006 season. Both were taken by Catherine Ashmore during a representation of Henry IV (in which, as you know, MM played Prince Hal). We already knew these images, they are just bigger and the black and white enhance the beauty of the subject, even if it's only his scruff.

Enjoy.

New Image of P&P NY Premiere

Nov. 22nd, 2006 | 03:12 pm
location: The truth? Shopping for new ties for MM...
mood: grateful grateful
music: Suite No. 1, Charles Joseph Van Helmont

Dear Journal,

These days are very slow MM days (i.e., no much news of him, really).

However, you know how the magic world of internet is and how you can always find new images or articles or anything related to MM, with some perseverance.

This time, and don't get too excited my dear Journal, just a new image of the P&P premiere in NY.

Yeah, I know, it's the horrendous whitish-greyish tie...

But the smile is nice, don't you think?

A tiny clip from Middletown

Nov. 2nd, 2006 | 05:18 pm
location: In Gabriel's presbytery
mood: blah blah
music: Vivaldi: Concerto For 4 Violins

Dear Journal,

I hope you have already seen the trailer of Middletown here:  http://www.eclipsepictures.ie/middletown/

I found this other clip on the website of Rté Television. It's from The View, a show broadcasted on 24th October, 2006. There is a clip from the movie then very good reviews:

Just click here:  http://dynamic.rte.ie/av/2185440.smil

Also, I'll leave for your appreciation this image from P&P.

We have all seen this one:

But rarely this one:

I prefer this one because you get to see Darcy's hand. Other interesting detail: in the first one, the candles and lighted, in the second, they are not.

location: Riding Darcy's horse (with Darcy, of course)
mood: productive
music: Stories We Could Tell (read by MM)

Dear Journal,

Almost Dead Huh?

Sorry! It's just that I had not much to feed you with.

You'll have noticed that it's soon be Ralloween. Just to celebrate that horrific day, I thought it would be nice to send spooky stuff to see.

We all agree that Matthew dubbed by someone else sucks.

To make my point, and because I'm a liitle masochistic, here are the P&P trailer:

In Spanish (from Spain): h
ttp://www.uip.es/peliculas/orgulloyprejuicio/quickhi.mov

In German:
http://trailer.uip.de/stolzundvorurteil/trailer_lrg.html

In Italian:
http://www.scuolainsiemeweb.it/segnalazioni/film/2006/orgoglio_e_pregiudizio_trailer.wmv

And the worst, in French: http://www.commeaucinema.com/news.php3?nominfos=44994&Rub=BA
(Mrs. Bennet has the same voice than Carolyn Ingalls in French!)

Also because it's so ridiculous therefore hilarious, the first proposal, in French: http://www.commeaucinema.com/news.php3?nominfos=44994&Rub=BA&vid=3482

The only thing funny about the above is that it looks like Matthew is completely fluent in Spanish, German, Italian and French!

You need now something to cheer you up, this very nice image of Matthew at the P&P London Premiere:

Also this image below, mostly Mr. Bingley, but if you look carefuly behind, Darcy's hands (with gloves) and thighs, in his tight breeches.

(looks like Bingley is on a shetland poney!)

Enjoy!

To comfort you, I send you this wonderful image of him, courtesy of www.Stellar-Matthew.org:

See you at the end of August...

Meanwhile, have nice MMlicious dreams.

It seems you are stuck with images from In My father's Den. But this time, with new images *hehe*.

I found them in the website of Nick Wall, the still photographer of the movie.

Tattoo Gate

Jun. 29th, 2006 | 10:30 pm
location: Under the King's Justice shirt
mood: hopeful hopeful
music: The Book Lovers - Broadcast

Dear Journal,

There is a huge controversy about the King's Justice in The Reckoning. Does he have a tattoo on his back.

The answer is no and I have these three images to prove it.

Crystal clear, isn't it?

And, by the way, talking of controversies, Darcy does say  "please" during the first proposal. And Lizzie says "love you" when she's going to enter into her father's parlour.

Dear Journal,

You’re supposed to be a live journal. You sound more dead to me than a dead racoon with the poor stuffs I have fed you with lately (i.e., nothing).

How would you feel if I told you that I can post huge, gigantic images of Mr. Darcy? Cubbie (from Pemberworth, or Pervertworth as we are known apparently) have kindly pointed to us all a website where images up to 5 MB (whatever that is supposed to mean) could be uploaoded.

http://www.picturesupload.com

In other words, I can upload huge images of Mr. Darcy there and they won’t shrink and become worthless thumbnails.

I have put a certain number of them below. Click one time to see Mr. Darcy bigger. Click twice (at the left up corner of the image) to see him even bigger.

Warning: staring too long at such huge images of Mr. Darcy may produce (i) intensive drooling, (ii) fainting and above all, (iii) irreversible brain damages.
Here we go. Enjoy.

 After the cut...

Dear Journal,

I have been awfully quiet these past days. Sorry.

Just a quick one to post a nice B&W picture of Tom. Actually, the image was bigger and involved both Zoë and Danny. But they don't get much of our attention, do they? Please note that we can see his very nice hands...

From now on, I will have a "quote of the day", with sound, when possible. Here is the first one:

"Make sure to secure the door when I am gone. There are many dangerous people who wanna take things from Americans and also kidnap them. Goodnight.

music: Let's go to bed, The Cure

Dear Journal,

I made this incredible discovery.

The first thing I do in the morning when I open the computer is to put on display my huge Darcy's picture taken during the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2004: I help me go throughout the day.

If you look carefully at the picture, before fainting (can a Journal faint?), you'll notice that there is a small mole under his luxurious and tempting lips (on his right side).

There. You see it? God!

IMDb

Jun. 12th, 2006 | 08:30 am
location: In Paul's orchard, early spring
mood: curious curious
music: I Think I See the Light, Cat Stevens

Dear Journal,

I read this very interesting article (published in the NY Times of 28 May, 2006) about IMDb and who's behind it.  I thought I could share it with you. You'll be surprised... It was founded by a British when he was 23...

His Love of Movies Now Is Worth Millions

By Richard Siklos

BRISTOL, England — Col Needham manages to keep most of the trappings of corporate life out of his neat office — a converted bedroom in a quaint house in the ancient village of Stoke Gifford, a suburb of Bristol, the harbour city that is 90 minutes west of London by train.

As the founder and managing director of the Internet Movie Database, Mr. Needham might just be the archetype of the telecommuting Web-head. The site he founded and runs, www.imdb.com, ranks as the 10th-most-popular entertainment spot online, according to ComScore Media Metrix. It had 18.6 million unique visitors in April, a 67 percent surge from a year earlier.

In Stoke Gifford ,Mr. Needham works solo —without even an assistant— but is in constant contact by instant message with other employees scattered across the globe and at the Seattle headquarters of Amazon.com, which acquired the business eight years ago. “Everybody assumes that we have a massive office complex on Wilshire Boulevard,” Mr. Needham said with a grin. “I always say, ‘We’re headquartered on the Internet.’ ’’

Part of what makes Mr. Needham, a boyish, closely-shorn 39-year-old a curiosity — beyond his enviable work setup — is that Internet Movie Database, or IMDb for short, has become a classic example of a hobby that turns out to be a powerful media asset. For years, it has quietly gone about its business almost entirely separately from its parent, and only subtly does it encourage users to go to the Amazon site to buy videos. “We didn’t sit down and think, ‘What’s the best way to make money on the Internet?’ ’’ Mr. Needham said. “This is very much a labour of love. When we started the company, there was no commercial use of the Internet.” Even so, IMDb’s convergence moment may soon be at hand, say studio executives who have worked with Amazon on developing a download service that could let people burn DVD’s on their desktops. Though Amazon and Mr. Needham decline to talk about plans, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Brothers are all involved in the project, executives close to the project have said. One media executive pointed out one aspect of IMDb’s popularity: if you use search engines to look for the title of virtually any past movie or television show, or the names of celebrities from those realms, IMDb often comes up as the first result.

Internet Movie Database began in 1990 as a bulletin board database of movie credits. It was started by Mr. Needham and some film-buff friends and was called rec. arts. movies. By 1998, the database had established itself as a favourite on the early Internet, and Mr. Needham was amused to receive a number of buyout approaches. One was an invitation to a London hotel in January to meet with Jeffrey P. Bezos, the founder of Amazon. Mr. Bezos told Mr. Needham that he thought the movie database could help Amazon sell VHS cassettes and DVD’s — Mr. Needham points out that it was in that order in those days — but also recognized that the site would need to be run separately to maintain its personality. Today, Imdb makes money a variety of ways: from advertising, selling publicity photos, licensing its content, selling movie tickets through partners and offering a premium IMDb Pro service (started in 2002).

As for his own fortunes, a clue is found in the original announcement of IMDb’s acquisition in April 1998. It said IMDb and two separate European businesses were bought mostly for Amazon shares then worth close to $55 million. Though it is impossible to know how the shares were divided among the three companies, the shares would be worth roughly $213 million now. For his part, Mr. Needham dresses like a regular guy, and he drives a Toyota. But the house in Stoke Gifford is actually just his former home; it now serves only as offices for him and his wife, although it retains all the furnishings, including his daughters’ bunk beds. The Needhams currently live in what he calls their “dream house” about 15 minutes away. It is there that Mr. Needham keeps his prized possession: an ever growing collection of 7,500 films, mostly DVD’s.

Fascinating, huh? Driving a Toyota, come on!

who am I, really?

Jun. 10th, 2006 | 10:48 am
location: Pemberley, in the music room
mood: crazy crazy
music: Cocaine blues, Nick Drake

Dear Journal,

You don't know me, at all. So I have decided to answer some questions below.

1. Name: Mrs. Tom Quinn (you wish!)

2. Birthday: 31st January (like Franz Schubert, Norman Mailer, Johnny Rotten, Lloyd Cole, cool huh?)

3. Piercings: Noooooo (no even the ears).

4. Tattoos: Good heaven, no.

5. Hair colour: Blond.

6. Pets: Two kids (just kidding). We used to have fishes but I got fed up of seeing them floating at the surface of the fish bowl, so, no pets anymore. The children are begging for a rabbit or a hamster but I stay firm.

7. In the morning I am: Cranky, whatever you do DON’T wake me.

8. All I need: Is love, and laughters.

9. Love is: All (see above).

10. If I could see one person right now:  My Grandma, who passed away on 3 December 2005 (and MM).

11. I’m afraid of: Carnies. Circus folk. Nomads, you know. Smell like cabbage. Small hands. (Austin Power said it and I agree)

12. I dream about: writing a script that would become a movie with MM in it.

13. I wish: I could speak Russian fluently.

Last…

1. Movie you rented: I never rent them, I mostly buy them *hehe*
2. Movie you bought: The Way We Live Now (ah, Felix, Felix, Felix)

3. Song you listened to: I have my iPod list on the computer with 1392 songs or so: it’s a mix of movie soundtracks (I love them), music I listened as a child (The Beatles), or a teenager (the Cure, Nick Drake, The Kinks, Donavan, Blur, mostly English I am afraid, with the exception of Elliot Smith), classical music (everything written before 1800, after that date, I become very picky).

4. Song you had stuck in your head: Into Dust (by Mazzy Star, it’s from the soundtrack of In My Father’s Den).

5. Song you’ve downloaded: The soudtrack of Everything is Illuminated. Just fantastic.

6. TV shows you’ve watched: I stopped watching TV (even Sponge Bob) ever since I saw P&P (not interested any more, I prefer watching my MM’s DVD).

7. Movie you saw in the theatre: Ice Age 2 (I had to take the children to that one, in Spanish, oh agony!), before that P&P, which I saw, more than once…(I have lost tracks of how many time I saw it, actually).

Do…

1. You have a B/F or G/F?: Yes but don’t tell my husband, nahhh just kidding, he knows all about my boyfriend.

2. You have a crush on someone? Hmmm, MM (oh God, what am I, twelve?).

3. You wish you could live somewhere else? No, but sometimes I wish my friends from France lived closer

4. You think about suicide? Not at the moment, no.

5. You believe in online dating? I believing in online friendship (with the insane people of the Pemberworth forum, we have so much fun)

6. Others find you attractive? Don’t know. Does being wolf-whistled by Colombian guys in the street count?

7. You want more piercings? No.

8. You want more tattoos? A gigantic MM tattoo maybe?

For or against…

1. Long distance relationships: For.

2. Using someone: Against.

3. Suicide: I have this fascination for guys who has committed suicide: Sergei Esenin, Nick Drake, Jean Eustache, Nicolas de Staël, Elliot Smith, Mishima, Romain Gary, Ian Curtis, Vladimir Mayakovsky, etc.

4. Killing people: I don’t think I could ever kill someone myself and I don’t believe in the death penalty so I guess my answer is no.

5. Doing drugs: I wouldn’t do it myself but who am I to stop others from doing what they want to themselves.

6. Driving drunk: Never done it (I never drive!).

Favourite…

1. Food? Real French bread, recently taken out of the oven.

2. Song? Tricky one. I can’t tell really, it has changed over the years, Norwegian Wood, by The Beatles, Nothing in the World Can Stop me from Worrying about that Girl by The Kinks, Hanging Garden by The Cure, Things Behind the Sun by Nick Drake, etc.)

3. Thing to do? Falling asleep.

4. Things to talk about? MM, books, movies, Russia.

5. Sports? I strictly apply the Winston Churchill’s philosophy when asked what the secret of his youth and energy were: “Sports? No sports!

6. Drinks? Coffee, mate (from Argentina) and white wine (mostly from Argentina because it’s the only bottles I can afford here in Colombia), not all at the same time of course.

7. Clothes? My new breeches/Darcy’s style (very uncomfortable, by the way…)

8. Movies? I have more than a hundred DVDs. I particularly cherish my François Truffaut DVD. However, recently, only MM's DVD have been played…

9. Bands? The Beatles, The Cure.

10. Holiday? Summer holidays (for the sun).

11. Car? Nope, not one just for me (but I have a driver, how cool is that?)

12. Ever cried over a girl/boy? Of course, who hasn’t? Never over a girl though.

13. Ever lied to someone? Yes.

14. Ever been in a fight or arrested? Not yet.

What…

1. Shampoo do you use? A blue bottle. Nothing fancy.

2. Perfume? Eau d’Issey (Issey Miyake) the perfume I have beenwearing for over 10 years now.

3. Number of times I have had my heart broken? Good lord, do I have to count!!

4. Number of hearts I have broken? No idea. Not many, that I’m sure of.

5. a. Number of guys I have kissed? I am not going to count that.

5. b. Number of guys I have kissed in the last three days: Sorry it’s been a slow couple of days, my husband and two or three fathers when picking the children after school.

6. Number of drugs taken illegally? None. One time was legal, I ate a space cake in Utrecht (the Netherlands), Oh God, I though I was going to die, never tried again.

7. Number of people I consider my enemies? None in particular. Anyone trying to take my place when I’m queuing up IS my enemy.
8. Number of people from high school that I stayed in contact with: Oh God, after 12 years of catholic nuns, none, I’m afraid. It’s quite sad actually.

9. Number of CDs? I can’t count all of them, last time we did there were over 300.

10. Number of scars on my body? A little one above my left eyebrow (an unfortunate meeting between my forehead and a radiator when I was 2)

11. Number of things in my past that I regret? Who wants to think about that, too many.

With the opposite sex:

1. What do you notice first? I just take a general first look. There are some absolute and immediate turn off (moustache, goatee, bald with long hair, synthetic running outfit, gigantic sneakers, cap back to front, sandals with socks, thong bathing costume, horrendous fishnet tank top, lots of tattoos, lots of hair everywhere, lots of piercings, gigantic chain bracelet with the name of the guy on it, university ring, necklace), and turn on (MM look-alikes!!, big beard, Russian type beard -yeah, I know, never knew why-, nice hands, pulpous lips, gigantic forehead, nice English (John Lobb's type) worn boots like these ones)

2. Worst thing to say? Anything when you’re blind drunk that you can't remember in the morning.

Are you/ Do you/ Could you:

1. Obsessive: Yeah!!

2. Live without the computer? Nope.

3. Like watching sunrises or sunset? Sunrises? What sunrises? Sunsets (I have trouble to be up to see the other).

4. What hurts the most, physical pain or emotional pain? Emotional.

Final Questions:

What are you currently reading in bed?

I'm reading Atonement by Ian McEwan (in French, lazy me!).

Which book have you re-read most frequently?

I’m not much of a re-reader. I’m afraid to be disappointed at the second reading I guess. I want to re-read the whole In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust though (there is a rule that says you must read it every 10 years).

Is your mind an art gallery or a porn cinema? If neither, which civic building is it?

At the moment, my mind is a gallery of MM’s photos.

What are you listening to in the kitchen?

The 1392 songs of my iPod. I hate the radio, unless it’s blahblahblah (theatre on the radio is great).

And in the car?

My iPod as well (listen 5 mn of any Colombian radio and I bet you commit suicide).

What's the least disposable pop song?

Every pop song is disposable. Tricky question. Maybe Norwegian Wood, by The Beatles.

Who should play you in your Hollywood biopic?

Natalie Portman. Oh, come on, why not? She’s an amazing actress, very good looking and pretty witty. And has no boobs just like me! An alternative if Natalie Portman is busy, Audrey Tautou.

What is your ideal alternative job?

A professional harpsichord player. I’d play mostly the pieces I like (Bach, Scarlatti, Rameau…).

And the realistic alternative?

I'd love to open a concept-store (serious word indeed!) with cool children clothes, furniture and toys. As a matter of fact, my dream shop already exists in Paris (Bonton, http://www.bonton.fr/index-5.php4?cPath=21). I prefer the clothes by Bonpoint though (http://www.bonpoint.com/collection_bebe_br.htm). The majority of the clothes for children is so ugly, and the furniture and the toys, oh my God, the plastic toys with horrendous colours.

Which painting most corresponds with your vision of yourself?

Any female portrait by François Clouet, Anthony Van Dyck, Nicolas de Largillière, Jean-Baptiste Nattier, Jacques-Emile Blanche, Valentine Serov or Julian Opie.

What was your cultural passion at 14?

It may sound stymied but my passion for Russia start to grow and grow when I was 14, more or less, and I spent days and nights reading Russian literature. Dostoevsky, of course (who you must read as a teenager after, it’s just too much very excessive and frankly badly written), but also Gogol, Lermontov, Pushkin, Griboyedov, Tolstoy, Goncharov, Turgenev, Tchekhov, Bunin, Bulgakov, Pasternak and Nabokov. As you can see, I’m not so much into soviet authors (except for the poets: Akhmatova, Esenin, Mandelstam, Mayakovsky).

Which cultural item would you most like to steal?
Can it be more than one? So, I'll steal:

1) the Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione by Raphael (it’s in the Louvre Museum)

2) an original copy of a picture by Leonid Andreyev, a Russian writer who did one of the first colour photos at the beginning of the century. This one for example is a self portrait made in 1910.

This one is his son:

(All his photos are now in the archives of the University of Leeds (UK)).

3) This one I may not need to steal it but buying it one day. I love everything painted by
Guillermo Kuitca (Argentina, born in 1961).

Corona de espinas, 1995

Untitled, 1988

He’s already in many Museums (including the Tate Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago) and slightly expensive.

Do you like parties?

Not much. I get so embarrassed, I start drinking to get more confidence. And it’s not good. Oh, nooo.
Which building would you most like to tear down?

The Eiffel tower. It looks like a gigantic suppository. And it’s the only thing people know from Paris. Yuk. There are so many other beautiful things in Paris other than this enormous amount of iron. The worst is that it was meant to be destroyed after the 1889 World Fair for which it was build…

What's the most fashionable thing you own?

My Jaeger Lecoultre Reverso watch which I love but absolutely never wear…

And the least cool?

My Sponge Bob pyjamas. The negation of sexiness. Horrendous but very comfy.
Are you yourself cool?

Oh nooooooooooooo.

Your house is on fire. What object do you save?

We’re talking about objects right? This excluded human beings. So, I’ll say the photos of my children. There are not very well organised, not organised at all, as a matter of fact: there are all mixed up in an old and heavy Mexican box. I guess I’ll have to save that box from the fire.

What do you cling onto from childhood?

A childish sense of humour, a 10-year old sense of humour (Mr. Bean's type of humour).

Dear Journal,

I need to start you with something beautiful. So, i'll put a photo of a smiling Matthew. Any objection to that? You'd better get used to it, anyway. Let's face it, who else could I talk about? Let this be a Matthew shrine with candles and incense.

[This smile is not in the Perberworth Gallery, *hehe*]

I now need to dig in other Journals to make you as pretty as you deserve, my dear Journal.

Hey, will you let me post my favourite picture so far?
